Owen County batter Sagan Wainscott tries to get out of the way of an inside pitch on March 29 against Western Hills. Wainscott was 1-for-2 with a single in the 14-2 loss.

Fans always support Rebels

A miserable stretch of three innings when the dropsies became contagious and every throw seemed misguided finally came to an end when Owen County catcher Sheila Wilson chased down a high pop fly in foul territory and made a catch against the fence.
That play ended an error-fest inning that saw Western Hills extend its lead over Owen County to 9-2.
And as Wilson came off the field, the small contingent of Owen County fans erupted in cheers for the nice defensive play.
It didn’t matter that the Lady Rebels were trailing by seven runs and would lose an inning later 14-2.
That play deserved recognition.
Owen County sports don’t boast the greatest records.
In fact, during the school year only the boys soccer team has finished with a winning record, at 11-10.
Football (2-8), girls soccer (3-14), boys basketball (13-15) and girls basketball (13-17) all finished their seasons with losing records and the baseball and softball teams had losing records last season.
Last year, only the girls basketball team had a winning record.
Yet, the fans still come.
And they’re usually the same faces.
The same students, parents, friends and alumni come out to support the teams — win or lose.
It’s easy to support a good team, or to jump on the bandwagon to follow success.
I knew a guy whose two favorite professional teams were the New York Yankees and the Montreal Canadiens, the two most successful sports teams in the world, as far as championships go.
It’s not that hard to root for a team everyone expects to win.
A true fan follows their team through the ups and downs.
And in Owen County, all those familiar faces I see at every sporting event are willing to follow the Rebels no matter what happens.
That’s being a true fan.
