Mary Matlack, 82

Mary Alexander Matlack, 82, of Owenton, died March 23, 2006, at her residence.
Born July 12, 1923, in Owen County, she was the daughter of the late Hugh and Stella Thomas Alexander. She was a retired secretary of the Methodist Board of Ministries.
She is survived by a son Russell Matlack of Corinth; two daughters, Carol Oelker of West Chester, Ohio, and Susan Stauss of Houston, Texas; and three grandchildren. She was preceded in death by two brothers, Hugh and John Alexander.

Mary Sullivan, 96

Mary Elizabeth Smith Sullivan, 96, of Shelbyville, died March 21, 2006, at Hillcreek Manor following a long illness. A native of Shelbyville, she was the daughter of the late Sidney and Mattie Calvert Smith. She was a chef for Science Hill Inn for many years and was known for her culinary skills. She was a member of Clay Street Baptist church.
Survivors include two daughters, Audrey S. Way of Shelbyville and Grace M. Jones of Los Angeles, Calif.; three sons, Arthur Lee Sullivan of Shelbyville, Ira Alvin Sullivan of Columbus, Ohio, and Donald Ray Sullivan of Owenton; a brother, Charles Henry Smith of Louisville; 30 grandchildren; 38 great-grandchildren; 11 great-great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. She as preceded in death by three sons, Sidney Sullivan, Allen Sullivan and William L. “Sonny” Sullivan Jr., two sisters and a brother.
Funeral services were held March 27 at Clay Street Baptist Church in Shelbyville with the Rev. Ronald L. Holder officiating. Burial was in Calvary Cemetery, Shelbyville. Condolences may be expressed at www.morton-beckley.com.


Hazel Snell, 86

Hazel Elizabeth Snell, 86, of Glencoe, died March 22, 2006, at Central Baptist Hospital in Lexington.
Born July 28, 1919, in Owen County, she was the daughter of the late Hadley and Cecil Maddox. She worked for the Scholls Shoe Factory until it closed its operations. She was a homemaker and a wife, mother and grandmother.
She is survived by her husband, Eual Snell of Owenton; a son, Richard Snell of Poplar Grove; a granddaughter, Victoria Snell of Glencoe; and two great-grandsons, Cory Ray and Cody Robert Bice. She was preceded in death by two sons, Robert “Bobby” Snell and Cecil Ray Snell.
Funeral Services were held March 25 with Bro. Keith Miller officiating. Burial was in Poplar Grove Cemetery.
