Even though we’ve still had
to suffer through some cold days, and there may be a few more
before winter’s officially over, once the baseball, softball
and track teams began practicing a few weeks ago, my spirits rose
a level or two.
I like those sports more than basketball, but mostly because when
the bats and balls and hurdles come out and the spikes and caps
and visors get put on, it means one thing — spring is here,
or it’s on its way.
It means warmth.
Sunshine.
It means it’s safe to return to playing sports outside without
the fear of freezing.
I love the spring sports.
I love watching games outside under the natural light or the artificial
lights.
And I love the pace of the spring sports.
With baseball, softball and track you can sit back, relax and
enjoy the event.
There’s no rush, and rarely do you see heated arguments
or crazed fans screaming or throwing a tantrum.
Baseball rolls along at its own pace, softball is a little quicker,
but still keeps a somewhat leisurely pace, and track meets genuinely
last several hours, or sometimes all day, depending on how many
teams are competing.
Baseball and softball games string together seven innings of hitting,
pitching, fielding and base running — a perfect combination
of skills that allow everyone a chance to participate.
Track is even more of a participation sport.
Whether you’re the best in the state or a novice competing
in your first meet, everyone gets a moment or two to shine in
their chosen events.
With 18 different events to compete in, including three relays,
track offers something for everyone and allows every athlete an
opportunity to participate.
And that’s what sports at the high school level are all
about — participating and getting the chance to represent
your school.
