It’s time to clean up Kentucky.
Commonwealth Cleanup Week is scheduled from March 19-25 and the Great American Clean-up runs from March 1 through May 31.
Now in its eighth year, Commonwealth Clean-up Week is designed to encourage businesses to come together with civic and religious groups and other nonprofit organizations to coordinate cleanup activities in each community.
Each participating county receives free garbage bags and the Environmental and Public Protection Cabinet is sponsoring three cash prizes of $1,500, $1,000 and $500 for eligible nonprofit groups.
Local residents are also encouraged to take advantage of Commonwealth Cleanup Week by spring cleaning.
So far, plans are being made to conduct roadside cleanup on Hwy. 355, Hwy. 127 and on Glencoe Hill.
Other areas will be added before the cleanup week begins.
“One of the main things is to try to do roadside cleanup,” Judge-Executive Billy O’Banion said. “We like to encourage as many people as we can to be involved.”
O’Banion said if any businesses or churches decide to participate in roadside cleanup, they should first notify the judge-executive’s office so they can supply all volunteers with safety vests and garbage bags and so all roads being cleaned can be documented for safety purposes.
“The biggest thing we want to stress is safety,” O’Banion said.
O’Banion said his hope is that the Commonwealth Cleanup Week will also encourage local residents to clean up around their property, removing items such as junk cars.
While the week is being treated as a free day at the transfer station, O’Banion said some items will not be taken for free.
There will be a cost for household garbage and for tires, although O’Banion said his hope is that the Tire Amnesty Program, where tires will be taken away for free, will be in effect some time during the year.
No hazardous materials will be picked up and paint will be taken away only if it’s dry and solid.
“There’s all kind of things we can do,” O’Banion said. “Just good basic stuff, and try to clean up our road sides and properties the best we can.”
Anyone interested in participating should contact the judge-executive office at 484-3405.
