Farmers across the country are getting a good look at one of Owen County’s finest tractors after publishers of Fastline Publications decided to feature the tractor on the cover of its Farm Edition magazine for February.
The tractor, a 1967 Farmall 1206 Turbo, was restored by Craigmyle Farm Equipment.
“Four guys worked on it for a month,” said Monty Craigmyle, who appears on the magazine cover alongside the tractor.
“It took more than 500 hours,” he said. “It takes that much time restoring anything that’s that old. You strip it down to the rolling chasse and build it back from there.”
The tractor, which was sold to a farmer from Canada, appeared at the 2005 National Farm Machinery Show, but was featured on the cover of the magazine for this year’s show, held from Feb. 15-18 in Louisville.
“That was kind of a special deal,” Craigmyle said. “They normally don’t do that for dealers. They normally do it on an individual farmer.”
Being on the cover isn’t too bad for publicity, with the magazine available in all 50 states.
“It’s pretty good advertisement,” Craigmyle said. “At the show everybody came up to congratulate us for being on the cover. It was kind of unique.”
The tractor drew quite a response from people at the show.
“People are looking for new equipment, but they’re familiar with older equipment and to find one from 1967 is almost impossible,” Craigmyle said. “It draws a crowd and it’s good for business.”
At Craigmyle Farm Equipment, they’re busy working on restoring another tractor, but have a tough task ahead to reach the same level of success as the last one.
