Up, up and away

Members of the Owen County High School cheerleading team lift Samantha Howard Friday night at Owen County High School late in the fourth quarter of the boys game against Walton-Verona. The cheerleaders cheered the Rebels on during both games against Walton-Verona. The Lady Rebels, which had lost twice to Walton-Verona by 26 points, beat the Bearcats 48-45. The boys, who had previously lost to Walton-Verona in double overtime, lost 54-53. The Lady Rebels are home at 7:30 p.m. Thursday against West Jessamine. The final home games are Friday against Grant County. The girls play at 6 p.m. and the boys game will follow.

District tourney is wide open

On the Sidelines

Tim Mandell

The shakeup in the district before the beginning of the basketball season opened up the door for any team to reach the regional tournament and fight for that elusive shot at qualifying for the Sweet 16.
For both Owen County teams, reaching the regional tournament is more than just a dream — it’s a reality that both teams have a legitimate shot at obtaining.
With just four teams in district this year, it only takes one win to advance to the district title game and earn an automatic berth in the regional tournament.
Despite being last in the district with a record of 1-5, the boys are finishing the season strong and have competed well in five out of six district games.
Entering Tuesday night’s game, Owen County had won three of their last five games and are 5-3 in their last eight games, after starting the season 6-11.
And not much separates the district teams from top to bottom.
Owen County opens the tournament against No. 1 seed Gallatin County, which beat the Rebels 55-50 at Gallatin County and 52-47 at Owen County.
If the Rebels win, they would face Henry County or Carroll County.
The Rebels lost to Henry County by scores of 59-53 and 46-38.
Owen County beat Carroll County 64-50 at home, then turned around and got blown out on the road, 64-42.
The girls are in the same boat, after going 3-3 in district play.
Like the boys, the Lady Rebels open the tournament against host team Gallatin County, and like the boys, played them tight in both contests.
The Lady Rebels beat Gallatin County 45-42 at home, then lost 44-43 on the road.
A victory against Gallatin County would set up a match against Henry County or Carroll County.
Owen County went 2-0 against Henry County, winning 50-30 and 40-29 and was 0-2 against Carroll County, falling 52-43 and 40-25.

Green reaches
for record books

Owen County junior Shea Green may soon find herself in the state record books.
Green, who made a school record nine 3-pointers on Feb. 11 against Frankfort, had one of the best 3-point shooting night ever in Kentucky.
Entering this season, Clare Fuller of Feds Creek was at the top of the record books, having made 13 three-point shots in a game in 1990.
Jamie Waltz (Highlands) hit 12 in 1995, Whitney Ragsdale (Calloway County) made 11 in 2002 and Lori Oller (Grayson County, 1999) and Noelle Whitaker (Harrison County, 1999) both made 10.
Eight other times a girl has made nine in a game.
