Bonnie and Thomas Strassell, owners of Eagle Creek Studio in Poplar
Grove, discussed historical printing processes and showed samples
of their work printed with hand cast type.
The Owen County Public
Library, amid thousands of printed books, was the perfect location
for Thomas and Bonnie Strassell’s presentation on the importance
of printing processes in history at the Feb. 16 Owen County Historical
Society meeting.
A highlight of the presentation was a demonstration of casting
type using hand molds and type metal invented by Gutenberg, which
is an alloy of lead, tin, antimony, and copper.
After melting the type metal, Strassell poured it into perfectly
square hand molds.
Unlike most metals, type metal expands when it cools to completely
fill in font serifs.
The Strassels reside in Poplar Grove with their daughters, Sarah
and Carolyn, and are the owners of Eagle Creek Studio Fine Letterpress
Printing.
They are currently working on type casting and printing a book
written by their daughter, Sarah, titled “Annie Oakley,
The Rifle Queen.”
