Mary Denham, 78

Mary Watt Denham, 78, formerly of Owenton, died Jan. 15, 2006, in Richmond, Va. Born Sept. 1, 1927, in Owen County, she was the daughter of the late Watson and Lillian Harris Slaughter.
She is survived by a son, Eddie Denham of Charlottesville, Va.; a daughter, Patricia Gangwear of Richmond, Va.; a sister, Allyne Lynn of Charlotte, N.C.; and four grandchildren. She was preceded in death by three brothers, Otis T., Ishamel and John Slaughter; and two sisters, Willie K. Bishop and Ruth Rodgers.
A memorial service was held Jan. 21 at Richmond Church of the Brethren.


Freddie Gaines, 75

Freddie Lee Gaines, 75, of Monterey, died Jan. 19, 2006, at his residence. Born December 8, 1930, in Owen County, he was a retired union carpenter and a member of the Southern Baptist faith.
He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Olivia Pearl Atha Gaines; a son, Larry Gaines of Hamilton, Ohio; a daughter, Marsha Gaines of Louisville; six grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a son, Samuel Lee Gaines, and a daughter, Regina Beckham.
Funeral services were held Jan. 22 at McDonald & New Funeral Homes with Bro. Tony Watkins officiating. Burial was in Monterey Cemetery.


Sherrell Howell, 30

Sherrell Lynn Howell, 30, died Jan. 17, 2006, at St. Elizabeth Hospital South in Edgewood. She was the daughter of Debbie Thomasson Webster of Owenton and Wayne Howell of California. She was a nurse’s aide.
In addition to her parents, she is survived by her companion, Jason Huff; a step-father, Curtis Webster of Owenton; a step-mother, Carolla Howell of California; two sisters and a brother-in-law, Christa Howell of California and Elizabeth and Brian Riddle of Owenton; a brother, John Howell of Tennessee; a step-brother, Brandon Webster of Owenton; three nieces, Janea Clay, Janise Clay and Emily Riddle; and a nephew, Anthony Clay.
Funeral services were held Jan. 21 at McDonald & New Funeral Homes. Burial was in Owenton I.O.O.F. Cemetery. Memorial donations may be made to the family for funeral expenses. Visit the Web site at www.mcdonaldandnew.com.


Michael Thomas, 48

Michael Allen Thomas, 48, died Jan. 16, 2006, at U.K. Medical Center in Lexington. Born Dec. 28, 1957, in Franklin County, he was the son of Joan Riddle Adams of Frankfort and the late Clarence Nicholas Thomas. He was an employee of Monoplast of North America and a veteran of the U.S. Navy.
In addition to his mother, he is survived by a daughter, Tamelia Michele Thomas of Owenton; two brothers, Clarence Nicholas Thomas Jr. of Frankfort and George Paul Thomas of Monterey; and a half-brother, Earl William Adams of Louisville. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Susan Michelle Thomas.
