The filing deadline for the May 16 primary is less than two weeks away and still there are races which have no candidates.
Those include first district magistrate, land surveyor, soil conservation, district 2 constable and district 4 constable.
“We’ve had several people who have picked up papers,” said Joan Kincaid, Owen County deputy clerk. “If they are turned in on time, we’ll have candidates in the races and in some cases we’ll have primaries.”
In the past week, three additional candidates have filed election papers. They include: Horace “Doug” West - R, for county judge; Brian Roach - D, for Constable District #1, and Bill Young - D, for Constable District #3. Young is the only incumbent in the group.
Kincaid said while the filings have been slow in the last few weeks, the early start, before Jan. 1, probably has something to do with that.
“That was actually early,” she said. “It started out faster and now it’s slowed down.”
But she and County Clerk Mary Kay Duncan don’t expect things to stay slow. In fact, they said that come the last week, they anticipate the filings will be flying in the door.
“That’s when people really get into it,” Duncan said. “I expect the last two days to be really busy.”
As of Tuesday morning, primaries were already in place in six races. They include: Democratic County Judge; Democratic Property Valuation Administrator; Republican Property Valuation Administrator, Magistrate District #2, Magistrate District #3 and Magistrate District #4.
Four races have been set up for contests in the General Election in November with the current filings. They include County Judge, Property Valuation Administrator, Sheriff and State Representative.
Candidates who have filed for seats that cover multi-jurisdictions include: Pamela Ervin Mann - R, for 61st District State Representative; Marcus Carey and Wil Schroder for 6th District Supreme Court; Daniel T. Guidugle and Joy Moore for 6th District Appellate Judge; Stephen Bates for 15th District Circuit Judge; Elizabeth Lester for 15th District Judge First Division, and Thomas M. Funk for 15th District Judge Second Division.
A complete list of all current candidates can be found on page 2 of this week’s edition.
